HOW TO GROW MICROGREENS



MICROGREENS GROWING FACTS:

  


Microgreens are tiny, edible plants that are older than a sprout, but younger than a full-grown plant. They are harvested when they are young and are a  concentrated nutrient source, packed with beneficial enzymes. Microgreens add beautiful colour and great flavour to salads, sandwiches and other dishes.

HOW TO PLANT:

Unpack the kit. Use the coco peat coin to make growing medium (soil). Follow the steps:
  • Place the coco peat coin in a container and add 200 ml of water
  • Let the coin soak up all the water and watch it expand into growing medium
  • Put the growing medium in the GIY pot and level surface

Sow the seeds and cover them with the growing medium. Wet the soil lightly with water to provide the right environment for seeds to germinate and put it in a sunny spot. Ensure that the soil is loose, aerated and well-drained.

GERMINATION:

The sprouts should emerge within 3 - 10 days.

WATER REQUIREMENT:

 It is important to keep the seeds moist during their germination, so remember to water the plants daily. Water them gently to avoid washing away the seeds. Check the soil by sticking your finger in an inch of soil. If it feels dry, its time to water.

HARVESTING:

Most microgreens are ready to harvest when they have produced a second set of leaves, known as true leaves (7-10 days). Some growers also let the microgreens continue to grow an additional week or so to produce baby greens (10-15 days).

 After harvesting, you can clear the topsoil of root net, and start growing again with new coir coin and seeds.

Microgreens should be used as soon as they are harvested and eaten raw/uncooked. Add them in a sandwich/salad/dressing in a soup and enjoy huge flavours from these tiny plants.

NUTRITION VALUE:

Alfa-Alfa
They are typically high in vitamin K and also contain vitamin C, copper, manganese and folate. Its benefits include lowering BP, treating arthritis and getting rid of kidney stones.

Amaranth
Amaranth is a great source of protein, fiber, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus and iron. It will keep your digestive system regulated and build your strength.

Beetroot
Beets are highly nutritious root vegetables high in vitamins and minerals. They are best known for their ability to lower BP, prevent cancer, cleanse the liver, treat anaemia and increase stamina.

Cabbage
Cabbage is an excellent source of vitamins B6, C and K. The cabbage helps prevent cancer, reduce heart disease risk and improve immunity and digestion.

Dill
Dill is a good source of vitamin A and C. The health benefits of dill include its ability to boost digestion, as well as provide relief from insomnia, hiccups, diarrhea and respiratory disorders.

Mustard
Mustard greens are an excellent source of vitamins A, C, E and K. They help protect you from heart diseases, diabetes and even cancer.

Radish
Radish contains significant amounts of vitamin C and several other vitamins and minerals that prevent jaundice, purify kidney and regulate blood pressure. They also contain sulforaphane, an antioxidant proven to fight cancer.

Sesame
Sesame is packed with minerals like copper, calcium, iron, and manganese, as well as vitamins and fiber. It has the ability to prevent diabetes, lower BP and improve heart health.

 FUN FACTS:

Microgreens are very quick to grow - from ‘seed to feed’ in just 1-3 weeks depending on which variety you choose.

They can grow indoors on a sunny windowsill or kitchen bench, or outdoors on your balcony, covered porch or shade house with no need for a garden.

They have a crunchy texture and can be used as garnishes to add flavour and colour.
